Art House North and Awaken Community Present...
Artists Respond: Racial Reconciliation

Are you wanting to become a reconciling community? How do we respond to racial violence and tension? Are you wanting to take steps toward diversifying the culture in your church?

David Bailey will be joining us at 7pm, Saturday September 21st, as well as Sunday morning, September 22nd (right down the street!) at Awaken Community at 9:30 and 11am.

David has founded two reconciliation ministries. The first is Arrabon - a ministry that equips churches and organizations to engage in the ministry of reconciliation with cultural intelligence. The second is Urban Doxology - a ministry that writes the soundtrack of reconciliation in the racially diverse and gentrifying neighborhood of Church Hill, Richmond, VA.
————————

On Sept 21st, we will be screening a new short film called 11AM: The Most Segregated Hour, which tells the story of Urban Doxology, and their response to the need for reconciliation by “creating cultural artifacts that build new legacies”. Followed by a powerful dialogue with David Bailey.

Please join us for this important conversation.

Doors 6:30, Event 7pm.

Coffee and dessert provided.

Sara Groves Songwriter Retreat & Workshop 2019

We are happy to announce that we will be hosting our second Songwriting Workshop and Retreat at Art House North on August 9th & 10th! Vocational artists, hobbyists, tinkerers… all are welcome. Join my friends and me this summer as we attempt to paint every side of the fruit bowl that is songwriting (we are not really painting - that is a metaphor). Guest facilitators confirmed at this time include Andy Gullahorn, Melody Olson, John Mark Nelson, and Joel Hanson (we are in talks with a couple more)!

We took the feedback from last year to heart and have extended our time together, and will be diving more deeply into the practical aspects of creative writing. The retreat will close with a concert by Andy Gullahorn - a pretty perfect way to wrap-up a songwriter event, if you ask me.

Our time together will include a lot of good food, conversation about the role of the songwriter, practical creative writing help, small group opportunities to share songs with other songwriters, an intimate writer-in-the-round, and the closing concert.

Cost does not include travel and hotel, but covers all programming and *on-site meals from 10am on Friday, August 9th, through the closing **concert on Saturday the 10th.

In addition to the workshop, I will be hosting a limited number of 1hr one-on-one songwriting mentor sessions on Thursday the 8th. These one-on-one sessions cannot be purchased apart from the workshop, and will be scheduled first come first serve (we will follow up with you to schedule a time, post registration)

Participants will also have the opportunity to submit a song ahead of time for feedback. A questionnaire will be sent out once registration is complete. Registration closes Friday, July 12th.

We look forward to seeing you!

- Sara

*there will be one off-site meal this year where you will be on your own

** the concert will be open to the public - your workshop ticket includes one admission to the concert.

Rabbinical Art House Study with Melody Olson (Thursday)

Art House Study Banner.jpg

Hello Friends!

It's time again to plan for the next Art House Study!

UPDATE: We've decided that for the Summer months we will hold one study a month, and for the month of June this study will be on the third Thursday. For those of you who like to plan ahead, future Summer studies (for July and August) will be happening on the third Wednesday of each month. Then we will most likely, in the Fall, return to the two study a month rhythm.

Here's a quick a reminder of what this night will be about:

The first 18 people that respond to this invite will gather to study scripture together in a new, adventurous way. I (Melody) started studying this way through a fellow nonprofit organization, 40Orchards. Their website describes these studies best with the following phrases:

"Welcome to a different kind of Bible Study...

Where you are listened to before you are taught. Where theology mixes with vulnerability. Where all voices hold important space in the conversation. Where the Spirit drives instead of an agenda. Where the Story of God is a multi-faceted gem that each person turns. Where you are free to have more questions than answers. Where you enter a space that offers healing and wholeness. Where the hope is for you to discover how to live as the best you out in the world, not inside our walls."

Another hope that I hold for these studies is that you will enter a space where you can be honest with wherever you are on the spectrum of belief, and that you will find a community that embraces you and your creative mind. We will also open space for you to share the things you are creating lately, champion you in those endeavors, and inspire you to create with even more honesty, courage, and strength.

There will be light snacks served and an opportunity to donate to support the sustainability of these studies (suggested donation is $10). All you need to bring is a Bible, a notebook, a pen, and your "self" - which includes the mixed bag of openness, closedness, tiredness, awakeness - everyone/everything is welcome.

Hope to see you there!

- Melody

Artists Respond: Immigration. With Cara Lewis & the 34,000 Pillows Project

Pillows_banner2.jpg

Art House North and Cara Megan Lewis of the artist collaborative Díaz Lewis will host a workshop on Tuesday, June 18. Participants will be invited to design a pillow to contribute to the ever-growing pile that comprises the artwork 34,000 Pillows

In 2009, to demonstrate its priority to enforce immigration law, the US Congress mandated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) maintain a quota of 34,000 detained immigrants per day in its 250 facilities around the country.  The mandate also known as “the bed quota” inspired Díaz Lewis’ participatory artwork where pillows created from clothing donated by undocumented immigrants, prior detainees, and their allies form a collective patchwork of individual experiences.

Each pillow is priced and sold at $159 to reflect the average amount of taxpayer money spent each day by Congress to detain one person. 100% of the proceeds for this project support the efforts of national and local immigration organizations whose efforts are dedicated to revealing the injustices of the detention centers and to restoring human dignity to those formerly detained.

The workshop is an important facet of the project and participants learn about the issue, while designing a pillow which is later sewn together by Díaz Lewis. The workshop is free and open to anyone who would like to participate.

If you are interested, please RSVP and then bring a bag of clothes you'd like to donate for the project. We will likely need around 60 articles of clothing if possible.

Hope to see you there!

Made To Flourish: Can you serve Jesus and still enjoy your life?

Screen Shot 2019-05-11 at 11.06.03 AM.png

AN EVENT BY ‘MADE TO FLOURISH’

Join us for an evening with Dr. Michael Wittmer, author of Becoming Worldly Saints. If following Jesus involves a life of sacrifice and suffering, is it wrong for a Christian to seek purpose and joy in this world? Many Christians sense tension between their desires to enjoy life in this world–the beauty of God’s creation, the rich love of deep relationships with others–and the reality that this world is fallen and broken, in need of redemption. How can we embrace and thrive in the tension between enjoying creation and promoting redemption? Dr. Wittmer believes the answer is by living out our God-given purposes. Come learn what it means to be a “worldly saint”.

Hello Friends!

It's time again to plan for the next Art House Study!

EXCITING NEWS: We had such a good response to the addition of a second study per month last month, that we decided to give it another go.  So, this event page is for a study that will happen on the THIRD WEDNESDAY of May - so if there are some of you who have normal commitments on Thursday evenings and haven't been able to make that work yet - this study is for you!

"The ecological teaching of the Bible is simply inescapable: God made the world because He wanted it made. He thinks the world is good, and He loves it. It is His world; He has never relinquished title to it. And He has never revoked the conditions, bearing on His gift to us of the use of it, that oblige us to take excellent care of it."

As Christ followers, we want to steward this earth that God has created. Join us, with Ben Rosenbush, Sarah Ann Nelson, and Sara Groves, for a night of artistic response to this issue of Creation Care.
